Folks ask me all the time, why Costa Rica? We have been contemplating this move for 9+ years. It is not a rash decision. There are many reasons why we ended up settling on CR instead of say, Belize. I will delve deeply into each of these in subsequent posts but without further ado, here is my abbreviated list:

1. Ummm, it’s Costa Rica!

Do I honestly need to elaborate? Beaches, rainforests and sloths….Seriously , the best beaches and literally one of the most beautiful places in the world.

2. Kind People

I can attest to the kindness of the Ticos as they wait to make fun of my ridiculaous Spanish until I’m out of ear shot. Truth be told they could probably make fun of me right to my face.and I wouldn’t know.

3. Ease of Residency

There are a few ways to become a legal resident of Costa Rica which will give you access to the Caja (their socialized medicine system) and the MUCH shorter immigration line at the airport.

4. Good Healthcare

Costa Rica is known for having good healthcare. I have heard the Caja is a mixed bag but they have excellent, affordable privte healthcare as well.

5. Bilingual Schools

Only important if you’re moving with kids. The public schools in Costa Rica are known to be very good. But if you are moving with kids that don’t speak Spanish there are plenty of private bilingual school options.

6. Easily Accesible from the States

The flight from Charlotte to San Jose was only 4 hours. It takes longer to get to California from here.

7. Pura Vida Baby!

Living a slower, more laid back life style is more than just a little compelling.

As you can see, we do have some practical reasons for choosing Costa Rica. Also, and maybe most importantly, we really, really like it there!
