I’m no lawyer, okay well technically I am, but I don’t practice law in Costa Rica (or anywhere at this point and much prefer crafting then legaling). I am only touching upon this topic to try to convince my friends and family to move to my Costa Rican compound, Kateland (still in the planning stages).

The information here is solely my understanding and I am in no way confident in it’s accuracy. If you are seriously considering joining me on this adventure, you need to discuss your situation with a Costa Rican attorney. (See, I did go to law school). Thus far, I have been very pleased with the attorney we are using and am happy to share her contact info when you’re ready.

Types of Temporary Residency

There are 5 main types of temporary residency:

• Pensionado – For folks that are retired and have a verifiable monthly income of at least $1000 US per month
• Rentista – For folks that are not retired but have a verifiable monhtly income of at least $2500 US per month
• Inversionista – For folks that are investing $150000 US or more in Costa Rican property or business.
• Digital Nomad – For remote workers who can show income of $3000 US per month
• Marry a Costa Rican OR have a baby in Costa RIca

Permanent Residency

After 3 years, you can apply for permanent residency. Hopefully at this point you are fluent in Spanish because you are now eligible to get a job! And if your name is CJ Hlava, you friggin’ better get a job!

Citizenship

After 7 years you may be able to get a Costa Rican passport.

Perpetual Tourists

Many folks pass on all residency tyoes and take advantage of Costa Rica’s 180 day tourist visa. This requires border runs and your re-entry is not necessarily guaranteed. In many of the forums I read, I am learning that the Costa Rican people and the government are not so happy with perpetual tourists and it’s future may be questionable.
