Driving through a torrential rain storm may be one of my least favorite things to do. Fortunately, we made it back to North Carolina from ATL visit, just in time to miss driving through a torrential rain storm. I was relieved….and then I remembered that soon, I will be living in a country where 6 months of the year is “rainy season.” I’m thinking I need to re-think my opinion about rain.
Rumor has it than many an ex-pat makes a 180 after a few months of rain. I don’t want to be that guy. It would be costly and embarrassing. Growing up in Southern California, unless there was scary thunder and scarier lightening, the rain never stopped us from swimming in our backyard pool. I’m hoping we can do the same in Costa Rica maybe in the company of some sloths or howler monkeys.

Impossible to know how the rainy season will affect us.
When we were last in Costa Rica, I asked every local I could about rainy season or green season as the Ticos call it. Interestingly, the consensus was the months leading up to rainy season, April and May, were hot, humid and unpleasant. However, when the rain actually started it was glorious. They call it green season because everything turns shades of beautiful green. The sunsets are magnificent and the coffee is exceptional.
The school the girls will be attending is closed for 3 weeks in October because that is the worst (and also the end) of the season. Assuming we don’t wash away before then, I’m thinking that is the perfect time for a trip back to the states to visit friends and family and dry off a little bit. I’m choosing to believe it will all be fine. Also, I’ll be packing all of our umbrellas.
